Rowan Cunningham is an attorney with experience advising nonprofit tax-exempt organizations on IRS-related issues including federal tax exemption, lobbying regulation, unrelated business income tax (UBIT), conflicts of interest, and fiscal sponsorships, among others, for 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) organizations. She also advises on other related areas of law such as Bylaws and corporate governance, affiliates and subsidiaries, association membership issues, start-up and dissolution, employment law, including employment policies and employee handbooks, terminations, and disability accommodations, contract drafting and negotiation, nonprofit fundraising regulation, and state corporate income tax exemption and state regulatory requirements.

In addition, Rowan has experience working with nonprofits with international operations on issues such as overseas affiliates, international grantmaking, economic sanctions, export controls, anti-money laundering regulation, and FCPA compliance. She also has conducted several employment and governance-related investigations.

Before joining TLG, Rowan worked for another DC-based boutique law firm serving as outside general counsel to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) organizations, advising on nonprofit law as well as employment, contracts, and corporate governance, among other areas of law.

She served as an Articles Editor for the American University Law Review. Prior to law school, Rowan worked as a paralegal for an international immigration law firm, where she developed an interest in public service and the law.

Rowan has presented on nonprofit law topics to boards of directors, senior staff, and at nonprofit industry conferences.
